A stunning super-Tuscan blend that marries excellent richness and ripeness to zesty acids and firm, muscular, tannins. This is sort of the opposite of Casaloste’s Chianti Classico. Where the Chianti is 90% Sangiovese with just 10% softening Merlot, this is 90% Merlot with just 10% Sangiovese for extra grip and bite.  Merlot thrives in Chianti’s sunny, sloped, vineyards, ripening past the more herbal character it can show in Bordeaux while still retaining balancing structure.  This has excellent intensity and grip with just a touch of Sangiovese cherry to go with Merlot’s currant and dark berry character. Smoky and firm from time in French oak, it’s a superb steak wine already and will gain elegance over the next decade.
