Stonecroft has the oldest Syrah vines in New Zealand. These vines were rescued by the founder of Stonecroft, Dr. Alan Limmer, from the Te Kauwhata Research station and planted at Stonecroft in 1984. They still have the original row of vines and fruit from some of these vines which is used in their Reserve Syrah. This is their flagship wine.
Varietal: Syrah
Aroma: It has rich, black fruit aromas with sweet spice and anise.
Palate: This is a selection of the best 8 Syrah barrels from the vintage. It is a dense wine with intense black fruit flavours, fine grained tannins and a long smooth finish. A wine which deserves to be cellared.
Bottle Closure: Cork
Vinification: It is fermented in open-top stainless steel fermenters. It is wild ferment. Hand plunged two times daily. Post fermentation soak for two to three weeks followed by maturation in barrel.
Alcohol: 13%
Reviews:
>> "I recently opened a bottle of Stonecroft 2006 Syrah. It was terrific. I expect this wine to be even better. It’s wonderfully dense with a genuine “old vine” texture. Packed with dark berry, plum, black pepper, chocolate/mocha, liquorice and mixed spice flavours. This is a long distance runner, although it is deliciously drinkable now."
-97 Points/5*****, Bob Campbel-
>> "Certified organic, the very classy 2014 vintage (5*****) was harvested from estate-grown vines, including the region's first Syrah plantings in 1984. Matured for 18 months in French oak casks (40 per cent new), it has dark, youthful colour. Mouthfilling, very rich and flowing, it is vibrant and supple, with concentrated, beautifully ripe blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, showing lovely texture, harmony and length."
